I always dread calls from school. They are usually to inform us that Aubrey has nose-bleeding or a fever. This afternoon the school called to inform me that Aubrey participated in a group presentation that entailed her standing on top of a chair. She slipped and fell, and hurt her back, forearm, and hand. The school physician said that she was checked and given treatment at the clinic and that she is all right and back in the classroom.

When Chito was in high school, the guidance counselor called me to inform me that Chito hit and broke a classmate's nose because the classmate refused to lend him some paper for a quiz. I was called to the office, and of course I went. I don't know what came over me right there and then--instead of apologizing I talked about peer injustice and told the counselor that, had I been in Chito's place, I would have done the same thing.

Surprisingly, the guidance counselor agreed with me. He never called me again.
