Now that almost all of our doors are sliding and made of glass, the only french windows we have are those leading to the walk-in closet in the upper floor dressing room. I intend to take even those away. French windows are hard to maintain and manage and restain, they are not sealed well, and they never keep rodents out. On top of that, whenever I walk into someone else's house and see a lot of french windows, I now perceive them as architectural pretensions.
