I would go with the operation. It is doctor-recommended and it is the right decision to make in order to have a clear conscience now and later. If your mother does not make it due to the 50-50 odds, you can at least tell yourself that you did your best, and that you did everything you could given the circumstances. 

Besides, if the operation does not take place, your mother will only deteriorate.
