After watching all those episodes of Clean House, not a single person has ever mentioned why a person really amasses clutter--as far as I am concerned it is not a holding on to memories of the past--it is a metaphysical refusal to die.
Procrastination in cleaning house is usually a subconscious affirmation to the self that there is still lots of time, that there are still many tomorrows, that one has a longer life to look forward to, and it is an unspoken perception that cleaning house is a form of preparation for death.
People who have gotten ill, who have just recovered from illness, who have experienced great loss, or who have death phobia are usually the most likely to clutter their houses.
P.S. It is also why old men never get down to repairing or mending broken things. They believe they have forever to do that.
