I am perplexed by an episode of Clean House in which a room was renovated with black-and-white wainscoting but had no furniture lined up against the walls. The purpose of wainscoting is to prevent the backs of chairs from hitting, knocking, banging against, and soiling wallpaper or expensive upper wood paneling.
Wainscoting is out of place in modern homes, where chairs are typically low-backed.
